Hot Topic:  Travel

Get your kicks on Route 66!  August is a popular month for vacations.  Traveling is a great way to experience new cultures, meet new people, and discover the beautiful scenery of our world.  Extensive travel can be very costly.  High-quality books can offer an inexpensive and meaningful travel alternative.

With a great book, readers can experience the majesty of Yellowstone National Park and inspect the Great Wall of China in the span of a single afternoon.  Additionally, many online resources provide virtual field trips that offer users an up-close glimpse of domestic and international locations.  Discover new destinations.  Update your collections with these Heinemann-Raintree titles!

Activities:

  • Have students plan a vacation.  Assign teams to read about various countries to help them make their vacation decision.  Once the teams decide on their destination, have each team plan two different routes and transportation options.  Each team will analyze their findings, decide on one option, and present their work.
  • Have students design a travel brochure.  Students can research a vacation destination and create a travel brochure and develop destination postcards.
  • Have students plan a great American road trip.  Students should work in teams and plan a road trip to various states.  Teams can read about various places to visit on their trip.  Have each team plan the route and identify sites that they will visit.  The teams should calculate their expenses.
