Question:  I am looking for ideas using Scaredy Squirrel books. Any suggestions?
   - Krista, Teacher  (working with Grade Level 1/2 French Immersion in FL)

Answer:  Dear Krista,

Thank you for submitting such a great question! I hope you find my suggestions useful.

Try a lesson comparing the elements of fiction and nonfiction.

Create a simple graphic organizer for student use.
Prep students by reviewing the basic elements of fiction and nonfiction.
Ask students to listen closely for fiction/nonfiction statements as you share the readings.
Read Scaredy Squirrel with students, then read a nonfiction book about squirrels.
Have students write down or cut and paste a few fiction and nonfiction statements from the readings in the appropriate column of the graphic organizer.
As a follow-up activity, ask students to write their own fiction or nonfiction story about squirrels.
Students can design an appropriate cover for their story and share their work.

FYI--We carry a title about squirrels:

My Big Backyard: Squirrels

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Good luck with your lesson!

Question:  I am looking for books about simple machines for 3rd grade students. Do you have suggestions?
   - Kassandra, Reading Coach  (working with Grade Level K-5 in MI)

Answer:  Dear Kassandra,

Thank you for submitting such a great question!

Please consider titles from our Simple Machines (2nd Edition) series.

Series description:
The most complicated machines often rely on a few very simple principles of technology—wheels, springs, screws, ramps, and wedges.  Simple Machines explore these technologies by relating them to common machines in our everyday world—from bedsprings to skateboards to zippers.  Numerous Fact Files offer primary readers fast facts and other pertinent information.

Levers
How are wheelbarrows, can openers, and bicycle brakes alike?  Why is it easier to hold a bolt tight with a pair of pliers than with your bare hands?  Why is it easier to eat a carrot with back teeth than with your front?  Why is a seesaw considered a machine?  This book shows you how different kinds of these simple machines are all around you to make your work and play easier.
Author: David Glover
ISBN: 1403485631  (9781403485632)

Pulleys and Gears
How can pulling down make something go up?  How do carnival rides work?  What makes the hands on a watch go around?  How does pedaling a bicycle make it move?  This title shows you how different kinds of these two simple machines are all around you to make your
work and play easier.
Author: David Glover
ISBN: 140348564X  (9781403485649)

Ramps and Wedges
How are a water slide and a ski jump alike?  Why is pushing something along a ramp much easier than lifting it in the air?  Why do skis zigzag down a hill?  How can a simple wedge stop an airplane?  This book answers these questions and shows you how different kinds of these two simple machines are all around you to make your work and play easier.
Author: David Glover
ISBN: 1403485658  (9781403485656)

Screws
How are a boat propeller, water faucet, and spiral staircase alike?  How can a screw keep your soda pop from getting flat?  How can a screw help you plant a tree?  Why might a large wrench work better than a small one?  This title shows you how different kinds of these simple machines are all around you to make your work and play easier.
Author: David Glover
ISBN: 1403485666  (9781403485663)

Springs
How are a jack-in-the-box, door lock, and umbrella alike?  How can a spring help you weigh a fish you've just caught?  How can springs help you get somewhere on time?  What kind of spring can lift you in the air?  This book shows you how different kinds of these simple machines are all around you to make your work and play easier.

Wheels and Cranks
What would the world be life if we didn't have wheels?  How do you think the ancient Egyptians moved huge stones to build the pyramids?  Why does a mountain bike have such thick knobby tires?  How do you think toys moved before batteries were invented?  This title shows you how different kinds of these two simple machines are all around you to make your work and play easier.

Subject:  Collection Development

Question:  I just accepted a new position as a K-2 special ed teacher.  I would like to get some ideas for "must have" titles in my classroom library.  I am also interested in books that would be good for read aloud.
   - Lori, Special Ed Teacher  (working with Grade Level K-2 in KY)

Answer:  Reviewing curriculum is an integral part of our product development process. When subject standards are revised, we make every effort to familiarize ourselves with the new standards and incorporate those changes into our products. Heinemann-Raintree offers several brands that address the learning and curriculum needs of the K-2 student.

Acorn is our new brand of leveled nonfiction. These books introduce the PreK-1 student to Science and Social Studies concepts. Acorn text is developed with the advice of a literacy expert as well as curriculum and subject consultants to ensure that the content is accurate and developmentally appropriate.

Read and Learn books focus on topics most commonly taught at grades 1-2. The books use a question-and-answer format to help readers focus on key concepts. They employ strong text-to-picture matches, provide opportunities for shared reading, and use large, readable typeface.

Heinemann First Library titles are great resources for first research experiences and for general interest. The books cater to curriculum for grades 1-3. The text and design are perfectly suited for primary readers.

To find out how our books correlate to your state’s standards, visit the Heinemann-Raintree Classroom Web site and click the Tools tab at the top of the page. Here you will notice a link to Online Correlations. Click on the link, which will lead you to a link for View State Standards. By clicking the View State Standards link, you will be given the option to specify a particular state (Arizona), select the appropriate grade level, and choose a particular subject. For instance, by selecting Arizona, 5th grade, and Social Studies, I am able to view a listing of the Arizona Social Studies standards for 5th grade students, along with links to Heinemann-Raintree titles that align with the standards.
